Legal Question in Insurance Law in California

Operator Exclusion Endorsement

My insurance carrier made me sign the exclusion form (excluding my adult nondependant son) before I could renew my policy. My renewal notice came with my son listed as a driver. I asumed that he was covered. My son since then got in an accident in our 2000 car that we recently bought. The insurance adjustor hesd told me that they do not intend to cover any loss or damages. Can they do that?
