Legal Question in Insurance Law in California

Retro Active billing

Senario: Employment terminated May 3rd 2008. Medical coverage continued until May 31st 2008. Was told by medical service provider that the soonest i could be seen was June 6th 2008. After telling her the situation she assured me i would still be covered since I made the appointment before the cancellation date. Upon arrival at the medical office, we confirmed the coverage and was told we would only be responsible for co pay and lab work. almost 4 months later I recieve a bill from the medical provider stating I owe for the services and after explaining the situation I was told that their computers would have shown coverage but the bill is retroactive to the termination date. What can I do? How can I remedy this situation? Can they even charge me if i was told i would only have a co pay? Please help

Re: Retro Active billing

Consider writing a letter to the doctor/provider along with a copy of the bill. Explain the agreement both of you made, that insurance would cover the charges except for the copay and lab work. If you know how much those sums are, send a check along with the letter which should state acceptance of the check consitututes payment in full.
