Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

If Company A makes data publicly-available on its website, can that data be analyzed, then republished in an "analyzed form" on Company B's for-profit website? The republished analysis would cite the source of the original data. In this situation, are Company A's copyright privilege's violated? Thanks.

It depends on the analysis. Giving credit alone may not be enough. There is a controlling legal case based on the redistribution of news and what constitutes copyright violation and misappropriation of protected information. If you are genuinely interested in paying to obtain a written legal opinion on this subject, please contact my office.

The first answer you received is correct. The case he's referrinng to was one where Sandra Day O'Connor wrote the opinion for the U.S. Supreme Court. Here's the case: Feist Publications, Inc., v. Rural Telephone Service Co., 499 U.S. 340 (1991). You can either Google it or just go to Wikipedia which will give a fair rundown on the case.
