You really should have a form email if not a form contract you send to request permission. But emails can be binding contracts if worded well enough.

While an e-mail is not ideal, it should provide you with a very strong defense if sued, and where possible damages are slight and the defense is strong, suit is very unlikely. I'd preserve both the outgoing request e-mail and the incoming "OK" e-mail, and stay within the uses authorized.
