Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

copyrights on works by deceased artists

I'm submitting a poster to a competition, and I was wondering if depicting existing works of arts in my poster was a copyright violation? What if the works are by deceased artists, such as ancient Greek scupture, or a Picasso?

Ancient Greek sculpture is probably in the public domain for the most part, but not other people's photographs of it. Anything Picasso would be a minefield I would avoid.
