Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

I have an idea, and want to secure my idea, how can I do it myself?. how difficult is to patent my idea? and how much does the patent process costs?

I tried a invention company to help me out but found out a lot of bad comments online. they want $750 to start with and $350 per submission per company. plus more money for developing, packaging etc. someone has paid $9K and still has not sold anything with their help.

There is a book called "Patent It Yourself." There are also patent attorneys. I would not use an "invention company," whatever that is. I would use an attorney.
