Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California
Ownership of Herb Formula
I have designed an herbal formula with another person that is now being researched for a disease. We do not yet have a patent on the formula. However, we want to split the ownership down the middle.
Can we write a simple document and sign it?

yes. You can even designate yourselves as co-inventors in the document.

You could, but you'd be better off hiring an attorney to draft a joint venture or partnership agreement. And in considering the formation of a corporation or LLC.

Sure; a non-lawyer-drafted document is not as desirable as one that has been professionally created for your specific situation, but is a heck of a lot more useful than an oral understanding or nothing at all. Be sure to make two (or more) originals and both sign and date them all.
