Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

Use of Paper Currency in Art

I have created collage works using pieces of paper currency - all *foreign* so far. Issue years range from the early 1900s to current. In many cases the bills are no longer in use or the issuing governments have since fallen. I use an entire bill and paint on top of it or I use a cut out piece of a bill to add to a large painting.

What are the limitations of use of paper currency that is, in particular, foreign (Middle Eastern, Latin American) and domestic (US $1 bill)?
