You can buy the book, Patent It Yourself, from Nolo Press, maybe it is in your local public library.
Any attorney will tell you, a person who represents himself has a fool for an attorney. There is not such thing as a lay person doing a patent search without the benefit of a patent attorney's analysis of the prior art, claims, etc. If you can't afford a patent attorney, wait until you can. Consult with an attorney in your area for specific advice.
