Go to Google, type in "fair use" and one of the first things to pop up will be the Wikipedia explanation. Read it.

He probably doesn't own the rights to most of his movies or other works; so you would not be dealing with him anyway.

No.

But, exhibition of his films, tv shows, interviews, etc. might subject the exhibitor (if a broadcaster) to the Equal Time rule.

Re: Politics NEWS fair use?

Who is Fred Thompson?

"Fair use" is always allowed. What changes is the definition of fair use. If a person is living a quiet and private life, his or her rights against media use of films and interviews may be quite different than those of another person who has deliberately stepped into the political spotlight.

Also, be careful to distinguish between invasion of privacy and infringement of copyright. A person's celebrity or newsworthiness will have a large impact on the fairness of general press snooping and reporting, but it will have a lesser (but still some) effect on what constitues "fair use" of the celebrity's copyrighted material.
