Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

Is the name E.T. protected under copyright? Can I print "I Love E.T." on a t-shirt and give the t-shirts away? Can I print E.T. on flyers to distribute?

First of all, names are protected by trademark registration, not by copyright. You have not provided enough information to be given an answer. You could be referring to any number of trademarks. E.T. (the movie character) is a registered trademark in many classes by Universal Studios. Or you could be referring to any of some other 550 federally registered trademark containing "ET."
