Purchasing a domain name

Is it ''illegal'' to purchase a domain name associated with the company you work for (e.g. product line that is about to launch)?

Re: Purchasing a domain name

If the domain is registered before the mark is put into commerce, they won't be able to get the domain, if it is used in the right manner. You registering the domain, however, would very likely get you fired unless you could convince them that you got it for them. Usually employees have signed contracts that prohibit them from using inside informatino like this to the detriment of the company.

If you get caught, you could be sued, and fired; and even if some third party were to buy the domain name, the company will probably register a trademark for that name, enabling it to reacquire the domain without too much trouble.

Probably not technically illegal, but it may be a violation of your employment agreement, employment terms, and would likely be grounds for firing.

You might also find yourself embroiled in litigation over the trademark, domain, and trade-secret.
