Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

i received a letter regarding copyright infringement for downloading movies. They are demanding $15,000 for settlement or else take me to court. Do I need a lawyer to speak with them or do I have to deal with them directly?

You should consult with a lawyer privately to determine whether this is a legitimate claim before you do anything else. A good lawyer should be able to help you minimize damages. Be aware, though, that fighting a lawsuit may cost you more than $15,000, in addition to any damages you have to pay.
