Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

How do I get a report of all domestic and foreign record/music/misc sales for a song I wrote that was published on a major rock band album in 1978? Can I send a letter to the law firm that represents the music publishing company? Would a letter with a QWR /Qualified Written Request work? Do I have to have a certain type of written document to get a response? is there any sample letter I can use?

Just write to ASCAP, and maybe also BMI (look on the album cover) and maybe also the Harry Fox Agency.

To my knowledge, a Qualified Written Request is a defined, special-purpose document under Section 6 of the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA). I'd start out with letters to the law firm and ASCAP, giving as much information as either may realistically need to figure out who you are and why the request is valid.
