Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California
I am a school band director who will be performing some arranged music from movies with an orchestra. We have the purchased the rights to the music. I would like to show either the trailer or small segments of the movie along with the music, as this will allow the students the sense of timing it takes into playing as a soundtrack musician. If we were to perform this in front of a small audience, would it be legal to include the trailer/movie segments, as this is mainly for educational purposes or would we need permission due to the fact we are showing it to an audience?

The "educational purposes" goes only to the teaching/practicing of the orchestra with the movie trailers. However, if you will be performing this to an audience (especially if the audience will be purchasing tickets), that would not be for educational purposes anymore. I would seek permission to show the trailers.
