small claims
I am to appear in small claims court and I am nervous as hell, how can I request a post-ponement at the court hearing due to my witness had a family emergency and had to go out of town and will not be back for a week.

Contact the court clerk and ask the procedure. (it's called a "continuance".) Usually it's as simple as sending a letter or filling out a form. My understanding is that the first time, it's almost automatically granted. If you've already had one or more continuances, it'll be a tougher situation.
