Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

My understanding is that if I use an image captured from television of a news personality for the purposes of creating a humorous parody, this would not be a violation of copyright. Is this correct?

More accurately, humorous parody would be a defense to a charge of copyright infringement.

Generally, parody is an acceptable, non-infringing use of copyrighted material, but as Mr. Stone suggests, there is always the possibility that you would be sued, even if unsuccessfully, by the copyright holder, and would be forced to endure the costs and headaches of defending.
