what if i want to get a word copyrighted to start a t shirt business i would own, is the copyright llegal?
because i read that one requirement to attain a copyright is it must no be for hire.

One cannot obtain a copyright on a word. One can obtain a trademark registration for a word (subject to all legal requirements).
The second part of your question is unclear, but I think you mean "work for hire." This means that if someone pays for a creative work to be made by someone else (like a commissioned painting or sculpture), the one who paid for the services owns the copyrights because the artist has made a "work for hire."
