Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California
I've written a story that's a take on Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" with the three ghosts visiting a person who has the same hobby as me. It's got the same structure, but I wrote it myself, with the exception of some well-known phrases like "God bless us, every one." I know the story is in the public domain, but still would like to know if it would it be legal to self-publish my version and sell copies at hobby stores?

It is difficult for me to give you an opinion since I have not had the chance to reviewed your book. Although having the same theme are Dicken's "A Christma Carol" is likely going to be safe, my fear is that there might be some graphics or other elements in your book that might be an issue. Feel free to call me at 424-229-2560 for a free consultation. We can discuss your book further along with any copyright protection that you should obtain.
Kind regards,
Jim
