Legal Question in Juvenile Dependency in California

Can a parent who's fighting to retain custody of their child, retain the services of a private investigator? If so, how do I go about releasing confidential privileged information to him?;

Normally private investigators are hired in consultation with one's attorney for good reasons including that reports delivered to the attorney can be claimed as non-discoverable work product. Now I realize that in dependency court you may be stuck with a worthless court-appointed stooge who can't be bothered to help. In that case I would go ahead and hire the PI, disclose whatever you reasonably must, and worry about possible consequences later.
