Legal Question in Juvenile Dependency in California

Hi. I purchased stock in a bank as a custodian for my minor child several years ago. The bank has just been bought out so I am receiving a check for the value of the stock. My question is, do I have the legal right to not pass the money over to my child when he turns 18 due to several circumstances that have occurred since the purchase was made or am I obligated to hand it over.
