Legal Question in Employment Law in California

availability

I have worked for a well known home improvement store for a little over two years. I am a college student. I was hired on as a part time employee, and my availability has always just been the weekends. I am a model employee, according to my numerous bosses. They just informed me that unless I am available to work at least five hours per day, seven days per week, I will be fired. This is not possible for me, so I will have to seek employment elsewhere if they fire me. Can they fire me, or cut my hours to so few that I have to quit?

Re: availability

No employer can require an employee to work seven days per week (or did you mean the hours could be assigned on any, but not all, of those days?). On the other hand, if you are an "at will" employee, they can fire you for any legal (non-discriminatory) reason or no reason. I would suggest you get in touch with the state Labor Commissioner for more information if you believe you have a claim.
