Legal Question in Employment Law in California

bereavement leave

In October my grandmother and my father passed away. When I found out my grandmother had died, I was beside myself. My first instinct was to call my fiancee (we have since married) and tell her the news. She was understandably concerned about me and wanted to come get me since I shouldn't drive home in that condition. (I was at work). She went to her supervisor who responded by telling her she couldn't go because we were not yet married. About 2 weeks later my father passed away and my fiancee was afraid to ask her boss about going to the funeral.

What I am asking is can this petty, ill mannered woman do this, just because we wern't legally married at the time? We married less than one month after this incident.

They can deny the leave even if you were married.
