Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Boss Throws Out Important Paperwork
My supervisoe is a neat freak. She frequently goes through the paperwork in my portion of our shared area, (she says it is not ''my'' desk) and tosses out things she deems old or unnecessary. I feel this is inappropriate or even illegal, since there is no secure place for me to put my personal stuff. She also (I believe) deletes files from our shared computer without discussion or consideration of the impact on my work. Is this acceptable? Is it legal?

Re: Boss Throws Out Important Paperwork
It is not illegal for your supervisor to decide what company related information should be purged. If you have reason to believe she is destroying documents that may involve corporate fraud, or to cover up illegal activity, you may report it to corporate officers. There are laws that protect whistleblowers.
If your supervisor may be throwing out personal property, you should discuss with her where you can store your personal property, so it is not in danger of being lost. Personal items left on a desk shared with your supervisor is not protected by privacy laws. Ask for a desk, locker, vault or other place you can lock and keep your personal items secure.
