Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Breaking of employment agreement.

I am a software engineer, working on H1B1 Visa. I have come from India and when I came to this country I was asked to sign a agreement with my company stating that I have to serve them for 18 mths. If I break the agreement, I will have to pay the amount of 1000.00 dollars.

I was not satisfied with the company. The jobs they were getting me were not good for my career. I then decided to leave my job. I now have joined another job and I get a legal notice from a LAW firm representing the company that I have to pay 67000.00 or else they will see me in the court.

What are my rights as a employee and what do i have to do now?
