California law - paid sick personal leave earned untaken

Must an employer pay a terminating employee untaken sick/personal time ''earned'' - like vacation time?

No. Unlike vacation time, sick pay does not accrue to the employee, when it is earned. Sic pay is only payable when the employee is sick.

It depends -- if it's PTO time -- then yes, otherwise, if it's separated into vacation time and sick time, only the vacation time needs to be paid out.
