Re: California legal holidays

The state holidays are listed in California Government Code Section 6700. There are 14 specific holidays, along with a general "any day appointed by the president or governor as a public fast, thanksgiving or holiday." There is no legal requirement that an employer grant time off for holidays or pay additional pay for work on a holiday.

As to overtime, California law requires time and one-half after eight (8) hours in a day and forty (40) hours in a week. There are some exceptions and limitations you should review with counsel. The California Industrial Welfare Commission has issued new wage orders, effictive October 1, 2000, which are available at www.dir.ca.gov.
