Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I am a commission hair stylist in ca is it against the law to having ur employer want u to work for free to bring in business to the salon? If I don't do this promo my manager is asking me to do I feel there will be consequenses from her. My job would be at risk. They went thru a marketing agency before telling any of us commision stylist they were doing this. Consumers pay $ 45 to marketing co and they get one free hcut one free deep conditioning and one free shine treatment from us. And we get nothing. This co sold more than 100 of these. I have 5 free services on my books this week. My manager was very mean telling me she will be disipointed in me if I don't do this promo. Isnt this against the law?

Nobody works for free. If you provide a service for your employer, you should get paid at no less than minimum wage for all hours worked, even if you are truly a commissioned employee (which is often misunderstood). Keep track of all hours worked. If it appears your employer will not pay you for your time, start looking for another job and file a claim with the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement against this one.
