Compensation for job is less than new hire

I have been working for a computer company for three years. AS an MIS employee I was paid less than the two temps that were hired to be my backup--that I had to train. My manager(female) would not pay me more as "they were men and I should expect that." I switched to Human Resources as a result of this. Now in HR I have found that an individual who has been counselled repeatedly for being indiscreet(divulging confidential HR issues to ee's outside the dept) and personnel conflicts, has been promoted. As the department assistant she was incompetent, she is functionally illiterate, and now she has been promoted and makes .05 less than I do. Do I have any legal recourse in light of this and the prior situation? Two other administrators when promoted did not recieve any increase in their salary. Thanks.

As long as an employer is paying minimum wage and not discriminating against any protected class, the amount of salary they pay a particular employee is a matter of contract between fact employee and the company. There�s no law saying they have to pay an experienced person more money.
