Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Compensation package rights
The internet company that I work for is laying most of its employees- and everyone is getting a compensation package. Right now my department is being downsized- and I inquired with my manager if I too would receive a relocation offer or a compensation package, he claimed that I would only receive a relocation offer to another department, within ''lateral move'' basically. I have a set schedule and go to church on Sunday- I fear that if they will not be able to accomodate my schedule. They claimed the if the schedule did not fit my needs - then it would basically be ''self-termination''. Could you please tell me if I have the right to a compensation package option- if everyone else is getting one? Or what my rights entail- Thank You

Re: Compensation package rights
That is a really interesting question. I do know if you quit because your are forced to work on a day you normally go to worhship you are still entitled to unemployment benefits.
However if a private company terminates you for not being able to work on a worhsip day would seem as if it might be discrimination based on religion.
Any attorney, would have to do a little research in order to find an answer to you for this one. However, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, and the EEOC might be able to give you an answer.
