Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Defamation by former employer

I have been employed by a large outplacement company for several years, as a business consultant. When I applied for a permanent position with another employer, I was abruptly dropped from consideration. This happened many times. I believe the former employer is making false disparaging statements about me, and has been for a long time, as retaliation and for other reasons. It has cost me many opportunities. Am I entitled to recover damages for lost income?

Re: Defamation by former employer

Maybe, assuming that you can prove that your ex-employer made unprivileged statements and these statements were attributable to your loss of future employment, but without any proof your belief would not be enough.

Good Luck!
