Legal Question in Employment Law in California

defaming reference

I have heard that there is some protection against former employers making negative statements about a worker to a prospective new employer. It is so? If so, I need a lawyer. My former employer has possibly defamed me to a prospective employer because of protected actions I undertook while employed.
