Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Why denied employment?

I worked for an company for 4 years with excellent recommendations. I left because of school and other employment opportunities. They advertised a better position to be open. I applied, and successfully completed the hiring process. I was placed on an eligibility list, in which the supervisor would choose names from in order to officially hire. I received a letter from the supervisor stating that my ''Qualifications, although impressive, were not sufficient compared to who else applied.'' This is not true, that can be proven to be false. Do I have a right to be informed of the real reason I was denied employment? I e-mailed the company, and they did not respond.
