disabled employees

I had been working for two months, and on my day off I broke my foot. When I told my work what had happened, they told me that the only choice I had was to resign so I resigned. Can they legally make me resign?

It seems like a rather harsh reaction. Do you need to be on your feet all day? Can they accommodate your injury until you heal?
