Doctor's release to Work

currently I'm on SDI.Had my elbow surgery a week ago..still on pain med...doctor hasn't released me...not able drive but employer has asked me to return to work or lose my job. FMLA leave has expired. Is this all legal? I get drowsy from medication.... should I take a break to take a short nap? Please advice... very distressed.
