Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Employee rights against employers harassing them

I am a software engineer , came from India about 1 year ago on H1B1 visa. I had signed a contract (dont know if it is legal to have bonded labour ) with the current employer for 18 mths. I have now changed my job as I couldnt work with him anymore. He now has sent me a legal notice from court that I have to pay him 57000.00 as damages.

Can anyone advice me as to what are my rights. How can some one do such rediculous thing in a democratic country as the US where the labour law is powerfull.

I would be intrested in suing the company for emotional and mental harrassment?

Any opinions / suggestions will be highly appreciated ?

Thanks

Re: Employee rights against employers harassing them

You may have a defense to the suit against you. Whether or not you do and whether or not you have any claims that you can make, depends on more information than you have given. In view of the potential liability you are being threatened with, you should seek the advice of an attorney who can evaluate your case based on all of the relevant facts.
