Legal Question in Employment Law in California

can an employer close the

Can an employer close his dental practice from Christmas to New Year's without compensation to his staff? The employees are full time hourly employees and he tells them it's slow and it's not worth staying open that week. Are they entitled to umemployment insurance? They return to work on Monday, is it too late to file? If the answer is in favor of the staff, does he owe them back pay?
