Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Employer wants to cut salary by 50%. Do I have any rights?

My employer wants to reduce my salary by 50% (ouch!).

My offer letter states ''Your salary will be subject to review and adjustment by [the company] from time to time in [the company]'s sole discretion''.

Is this a breach of contract? Or are they protected by the above statement in the offer letter?

Do I have any laws on my side to use in bargaining? Unemployment insurance?

Thanks!

An employer is free to adjust the wages of an at-will employee. Unless the agreement provides for a specific term of employment i.e. one year at a particular rate of pay, you do not have a breach of contract. As to bargaining, your value verses your ability to secure a full wage elsewhere will be your best argument. However, you may be able to resign and still receive unemployment insurance, as a reduction in wages may be considered "good cause" for quitting. However, prior to quitting, you should consult with an attorney and discuss your specific facts to determine whether you will qualify for unemployment compensation.
