Can my employer make me pay for a machine that broke while I was using it

Generally an employer in California may not require an employee to pay back the employer for breakage or shortages, unless the employee acted grossly negligent or deliberately in causing the breakage or shortage. See this website for more details: http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/faq_deductions.htm
If you feel your employer has taken an improper deduction from your wages or otherwise paid you improperly, you should contact an employment attorney.
