what can a employer say/can not say about a previos emplyee

I work for The United States Postal Service and i requested for a transfer to another facility.My supervisor gave me a bad evaluation to another supervisor and said things bad about me that were not true. Because of this, I was denied a position

at the other facility. What can a employer say or can not say about your previous job performance.

Legally they can say anything that is true. If untrue, they would be subject to possible lawsuit.
