Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Employers requires clear plastic zip bag in lieu of purse

Is it legal for an employer to require female workers to carry a clear plastic zipper bag to and from work? This, they say is being done to catch shoplifters.

I feel that my privacy is being invaded. Women carry some VERY PERSONAL things in their purses.

That sounds like a load of b.s. If the policy is only being applied to females its discriminatory; it also seems to me that there's a better way of checking for shoplifters than by invading your privacy. You might want to challenge the policy with a letter to h.r. and see what the response is; although if you feel h.r. will retaliate against you for the complaint (even though such retaliation would be illegal), maybe it's not worth the effort -- depends how strongly you feel about the issue.

Something smells bad with these facts. May have valid claim but need more info.
