Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Employers rights on absences and sick calls

When an employee calls in sick or absent does the employer have the right to call back later to see if you are home? If you let the employer know that you had called the police and that there was no report taken, but they may call a given number to confirm that the police were at this address, may they suspend you on the grounds that it is not the employer's responsibility to call? Harassment seems to be hard to prove until mental damage is done, is there a way to stop it before then?
