Legal Question in Employment Law in California
My employment was terminated because I stayed home to take care of a sick child. I have met with an attorney who wants to represent me on a contingency basis. However, their contract indicates I am liable for any costs they incur even if they do not obtain a settlement for me. Is this usual and customary?

Yes. Attorneys work at a risk when taking cases on a contingent fee and they want the client to have some responsibility. Attorneys don't want to risk working for free and also pay the costs. It is reasonable.
