You should talk to your attorney or a new attorney that specializes in employment law. A former employer is strictly limited in what he/she may say about you without being in violation of existing law. You may be entitled to damages if you can show that what the old employer said prevented you from getting a job.

It is unlawful for a former employer to make false statements to a perspective employer. If that is what is happening, you have the basis of an action against your former employer.
