Your boss is partially correct. This is because most employment for an unspecified period of time may be terminated at any time, at the will of either the employer or the employee. There are exceptions to the rule. Union employers, for example, are often protected by a collective bargaining agreement. Also, employers may not terminate an employee for a reason that is prohibited by law, such as discriminatory or certain retaliatory reasons. We usually have to address the motive for why an employee was fired look at whether that motive was unlawful and whether the unlawful motive can be proven.
