Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Extracurricular Pay

I recently tested positive for marijuana at my place of employment. My employer has graciously let me keep my job provided I attend and complete an out-patient treatment program. My insurance company would not cover the costs involved, so I have to pay for the program I'm attending through the County ($765 for 12 weeks).

I'm required to attend two 2-hour ''group'' meetings per week on my days off, in addition to attending four AA or NA meetings per week, which usually run at least one hour per meeting. My question then: Is my employer required to pay me for attending these non-work-hour meetings? They say no, but it sounds fishy to me.
