Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Failure to pay wages
I worked for four days as a part-time bartender for a business in Cagnoga Park, CA. I quit for many reasons. The final one being that the owner yelled at me for a customer asking him what time I got off of work. I feel that I could not control what anyone asked him. Other reasons were: he kept postponing me completing my hire paperwork (W4, I9...), he allowed smoking by the customers in the facility (which is illegal in California and I have asthma), he kept the facilty in poor and filthy condition, the owner lied about the clientele and about how much tips I could expect.
It has been over a month and he has still not paid me for the time I worked. he keeps telling me via phone that he mailed the check. The last time he was phones, he claimed that I never worked there. I have called several agencies and each refers me to another. How can I get paid (at this point it is the principle and not the amount)? What action can I take? Which agency can help me if any?
Thank you.
