Legal Question in Employment Law in California

filling in as manager-do they have to pay me?

About one year ago, we experienced some turnover in our office. I was told by my boss that I was to take the lead and run the office until the upper management position could be filled. This happened again recently with the death of our latest manager. I am a salaried employee and have been told that I am in charge again. Do they have to pay me the upper management rate?

Not unless you insist upon it or they feel generous. Employers typically pay the least they can get away with. It sounds as if they badly need you and would probably pay whatever you demand (at least temporarily). Keep in mind that if you undervalue yourself, so will your bosses.
