Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Freedom of Speech in the workplace

On a couple occasions during the course of a phone conversation, I used the word "hon" in passing. Does my employer have the RIGHT to have control of my speech during the course of a conversation???

She has made this issue a "bone of contention" and I need to know what my rights are on this issue???? Please advise me on this issue.

Thank you.

Re: Freedom of Speech in the workplace

When you're raising an issue of free speech, I assume you were referring to your rights under the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. The First Amendment states that Congress shall not pass any laws restricting you're right free speech. Since your employer is not Congress, they can have any rules they want to regarding your speech while on duty.
