Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I'm a freelancer in the entertainment industry. I was formally offered a position and accepted (all verbally) which meant I had to quit my current job somewhat abruptly. After I quit I received a call from the new job saying they had to give the position to someone else. Where do I stand in regards to having a verbal contract? Is there anything I can do?

Your employment with the company would presumably have been at-will, so even if you had a verbal contract, they could break it (assuming it was not based on any unlawful criteria). However, you may have a claim for detrimental reliance if the company knew or should have known that you would be quitting your current job to accept the position. Please give me a call at (213) 381-6557 or email me at [email protected] if you would like to discuss the matter further.

All the best,

Ari Leichter
